Editor's Letter: September Vogue
As I write, the news has just broken that Britain has voted to leave the EU. For people like me and many other members of the creative industries, this is a blow that we had hoped would not happen, but it also has thrown into relief how important artistic creativity is when the world seems bleak. Fashion is one of the great pleasures in life, on a practical level and also as a means of expression, and this issue is suffused with the ideas and inspiration that it can bring.
Clothing is part of life in so many ways - as our uniform and armour for the day, as our way of defining our identity, as a quick-hit shopping cheer-up. At Vogue we like to engage with all this, as well as using the work of so many talented designers as a springboard for the memorable and exciting fashion images that have defined the magazine for over a century. This issue is no exception, from the hazy, youthful take on tailoring from Colin Dodgson with contributing fashion editor Francesca Burns ("Tidal Shift", page 272) to Mario Testino and Lucinda Chambers's exotic and painterly tribute to the great artists of Spain ("Prize Fighters", page 302).
